Adult Upgrading at the Centre

LCG ensures that quality literacy services are available and provided throughout the Town of Georgina through our Literacy Basic Skills (LBS) Program. The LBS Program includes:

    1. Information and Referral
    2. Literacy assessment
    3. Training plan development
    4. Training
    5. Follow-up
Students complete an assessment of their skills, discuss their goals with a staff member, and work with the staff member to create their training plans. Students receive training in a number of ways, including weekly meetings with a volunteer tutor, small group sessions, and use of the computers in 'The Learning Lab" or online, using special computer software developed to help adults improve their reading and math. All students, staff and volunteers are asked to sign a Statement of Confidentiality.

LCG is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, with some evening training available by appointment. Students participating in our literacy training can attend 2 - 35 hours per week, dependent upon their needs and time availability.

Literacy is a concern across the province of Ontario, and particularly in the Town of Georgina. Lower literacy levels can inhibit individuals from opportunities for employment and decrease self-esteem and self-confidence. The LBS Program is an essential component of the services offered in Georgina, responding to the needs of clients involved with Ontario Works and Employment Insurance programs. Utilizing the services of LCG, clients can develop literacy skills, increase self-confidence and self-esteem, and build a foundation from which they can develop employability skills and economic independence.
